Kathy Peper not going to let someone was diving with a fatal or near fatal incident because they were in poor physical condition.
Peper, owner of Get Wet Scuba in Palm Springs, witnesses and hear about fitness / health-related fatal and near fatal diving incidents in the island of Catalina, decided to do something about it.
"It was a wake-up calls me," Peper said. "Then I thought about diving near a friend who was not in good shape, and I thought, you know, it could be next. "
Peper realize that since he had started to dive together, her friend had lost the vitality it once had. He had gained weight and struggled to swim to the surface.
"We want to be swimming along and had to get out of breath," she says. "And I I thought, 'You gotta be kidding – This is an easy dive. "
For the love of her friend – and for the good of all divers – Peper determined I had to do something that I encourage you to get in shape.
"It's the kind of person who likes people and loves doing things with a group," Peper said. " So I wanted something that would be a group activity. That could have started a training group, but thought it might be more [that] by bringing our diving center there. "
From there, Get Wet Scuba launched Fitness Challenge Get Wet Scuba. For now, this is not your typical fitness problem that focuses on shedding fat. In the creation of the Challenge, Peper acknowledged that "fit" for diving consists of three main areas: physical fitness, education and security, and participation in diving.
The Fitness Challenge – 1ro place October, 2008-abril 1, 2009 – Participants earn points for their activities, with the winner qualifying for international dive trip. Participants earn points or qualifies in all categories, and there was minimal. For example, you earn one point for each 30 minutes of exercise, and one to three points of immersion, depending on conditions. Participants also had to be DAN members, oxygen and CPR trained and have participated in at least two diving courses of continuing education during the interval Challenge.
If you think this is too onerous for the typical diver, think again. Get Wet Scuba has had extensive involvement.
"About 40 people signed up when we started, "Peper confirms." And few have been very patriotic, making their score sheets and all. Our courses in CPR and Oxygen Provider fared better, and we have increased our specialties. The challenge has motivated not a few of our clients to get fit and to dive more, and has helped our business in this economy strong. "
Peper adds that this is especially significant because their area has a large proportion of retirees, a significant part of his client set age of 50.
According to Peper, one reason for the Challenge's success has been the pressure of the group, including his own.
"It's kind of a trip guilt, "he admits," but a group of us were on Catalina Island [a local dive site] and noted that, of all present, only three of us could increase the delivery of CPR and first aid if something happened and it was wrong. "
Peper said that almost everyone in the group of late enrolled in a course in Emergency First Response.
Another reason for success is to Get Wet Scuba has helped the network participants in increasing the challenge. Get Wet Scuba maintains a list of friends regionalized training so people can gather to train. This not only creates accountability, but it helps divers find new friends to dive with. Get Wet is also connected to a local health club that offers Get Wet Scuba Fitness Challenge participants a special rate for membership six months.

Peper said that the challenge fitness for scuba, is something any PADI operator should consider. She says it has worked well. The only major change would be to start to promote and to contact the media about it before. But, he says, challenges like this are beyond help your bottom line.
"People who have stepped up [something like this] deserve recognition in our community," he says. "What might inspire others to participate actively, and that's important, no matter who they are. "
