Questions about Scuba Diving?

Alright so as a school option we could pick scuba diving, cool huh? I’m excited and all but after reading up a bit about scuba diving I read a bit on the negative issues of scuba diving. So I wanted to know how I can take precaution (we are learning from professionals and such) towards any thing I shouldn’t / should do when I am diving.

We are starting off in a pool obviously and I will be doing this all year for school. The pool is only maximum 4-5m deep I’m guessing. Is it possible to get decompression sickness and such sicknesses as that?

Also, I wanted to know if It’s safe to attend a cross country running tryout right after 2 hours of scuba diving, I presume the cross country running tryouts will have a lot of running (it will last about 1-2 hours)

So yes, thanks to anyone who can answer

1. You won’t spend enough time underwater at such a shallow depth to really make a difference in terms of decompression sickness.

2. You could get a lung over expansion injury in that shallow of water if you come up too quickly. At this depth, you’d need to take and hold a HUGE breath and stand up from the bottom very quickly. Once again, it could happen, but the items that need to fall into place for it to occur make the situation almost non-existent.

3. Regarding the running (exercise) after being in the pool, call DAN (Divers Alert Network). They are the leaders in decompression and diving medicine. They even help out non-members. Let them know you will be doing the pool training sessions, followed by two hours on the surface, followed by running. My one major tip if you do this is to re-hydrate. Diving involves breathing dry air, so you are losing a lot of moisture from your body; therefore, really re-hydrate before running.
